Rolex story a PR stunt?

By Manny Piñol

The story of the Rolex which was given to me as a gift and which was returned to the giver with apologies and appeal for understanding was read by almost 3 million people and shared over 17,000 times with 61,000 Likes in this Facebook page.

I was overwhelmed by the reaction of people and it was a major topic that even President Rody Duterte talked about it in a speech in the Bicol Region.

President Duterte said I should just have sold the watch and used the money to buy rice for the poor.

Of course, the President was just joking because as a lawyer he knows that accepting the gift and giving it to somebody else in another form would still be a criminal act on my part.

While millions appreciated the return of the Rolex watch, there are a few cynics who claim that the Rolex story was not really true and that it was just a public relations stunt.

Last night, I received an advance information that a story saying that I did not really return the Rolex would be coming out of the media soon.

I cannot blame people for being cynical and unbelieving.

With the degree of corruption in government, people have stopped believing that there are still government workers who could live up to the tough standards of propriety for public servants.

Well, here is my dare to those who cannot and do not believe that the Rolex story and its return to the gift-giver was real:

Step forward, make your claim and show proof. If you can prove that I did not return the Rolex to the giver, I will immediately resign as Secretary of Agriculture.

On the other hand, if I can prove that it was really returned, I will also ask you to resign from whatever job you have now, from the newspaper you work in if you are a reporter, and apologise publicly.

I may not be brilliant but I am certainly not dumb. Of course, I documented the return of the gift!

Finally, here is my appeal to the cynics: Please believe that there are still people in government who would like to live up to the stringent standards set for officials in government.

Please believe that when President Duterte declares that he will stop corruption in government, those who work with him are taking his orders seriously.

By believing that there are still people in government who could resisttemptations, you are actually encouraging them to do better.

But by doubting them, you are in effect telling them that their resolve to resist temptations for the perks and rewards of power is all for naught.

By doing that you are pushing them to the crevice of corruption.

Here is my Christmas message to the Filipino people:

Believe in the resolve of President Duterte to change the country for the better.

Believe that this country could still be saved from corruption and crime.

Believe in the goodness of people in government and most of all, believe that deep inside each one of us is the desire to do good and to serve.

Let it out. Be good, serve your fellowmen and enjoy an unusual feeling of gratification and joy.

Merry Christmas to one and all!
