Manila Philippines – The Catholic bishops expected to attend at the Senate committee to explain why they accepted financial assistance from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to buy vehicles (SUVs).

“If proven true that some bishops are on the take, it could dent the credibility of the Church,” said former Novaliches Bishop Teodoro Bacani.

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) chair Margarita Juico revealed that seven Mitsubishi Pajeros were given to the bishops.

“I think those concerned should speak up… otherwise the whole hierarchy will be affected... Whether this is proven by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) or not, they should come out. The truth will set you free,”

According to Sen. Teofisto Guingona III, the Senate wants to hear the testimonies of Butuan City Bishops Juan de Dios Pueblos, Bontoc-Lagawe Bishop Rodolfo Beltran, Abra Bishop Leopoldo Juacian, Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad, Zamboanga Archbishop Romulo Valles, and Nueva Segovia Archbishop Erbesto Salgado.

Manila auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said he had no idea how they got involved in the controversy.

"Hindi ko lang alam kung pano nakinabang ang mga Obispo dyan. Kasi ang iba ay nakakatanggap ng tulong para sa mga project sa mga mahihirap at disaster preparedness and related assistance… Kaya nga isama sila sa imbestigasyon at makapagpaliwanag na rin ang mga Obispo ditto.” he said.

Guingona said he expects the bishops to cooperate in the Senate inquiry since the CBCP has expressed the need to seek the true.

“The people have been watching the hearings and you can see if there is bias and the people are able to give their side. The mere fact that the bishops have chosen to come, this is the first venue wherein the bishops have agreed to come, is that not an indication of the fairness and transparency of the hearings?” Guingona said.
