No Lenten break for Duterte Gov’t relief operations to quake-affected areas

Government relief assistance and operations continue despite the Lenten holidays from Maundy Thursday (April 13) to Easter Sunday (April 16) for earthquake victims and displaced residents in Batangas.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said the task force was created after President Duterte ordered speedy and continuous relief operations for residents affected by the magnitudes 6 and 5.6 earthquakes that occurred on Saturday afternoon.

Georgina Garcia, OCD4A-RDRRMC public information officer, disclosed that DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo visited Tingloy island residents to assure residents there of continuous government relief operations.

“I have instructed our concerned units and offices to augment the needed resources and provide appropriate interventions to affected individuals, especially to children, pregnant women, persons with disabilities and senior citizens,” Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo said.

“We appeal to the Filipinos to ensure earthquake preparedness at home and in communities,” she said.

“Preparedness is our best defense against calamities. When we are prepared, rehabilitation after disasters becomes faster and easier.”

City Mayor Beverly Rose Dimacuha said the declaration of a state of calamity for the city was prompted by “the urgent need to employ emergency measures to hasten the restoration of affected properties and infrastructure, reinforce the city’s preparedness for a similar calamity and aid the constituents to return to their normal living.”
