Watch: President Duterte becomes emotional in visit to Marawi. Here’s why

In his speech before members of the 1-3rd Infantry Brigade in camp Ranao, President Rodrigo Duterte voice cracked when he shared his nightly routine.

Duterte was overcome with emotional as he explained the tough choices he had to make in declaring martial law in Mindanao.

“Every night tuwing mababasa ko yung briefer… nababasa ko yung ilang casualties,” Duterte said.

‘Because of the critical condition as assessed by your military and different department, I have to declare martial law. Otherwise, I will be a candidate for impeachment also. Mas mabigat yun, pwede ako maalis sa pwesto at mapahiya.” He said.

“Pero I graieve, maski doon sa mga namatay na civilians. Ganoon din para sa akin, lalo na sundalo, lalo na ako ang nag-utos na pumunta kayo ditto at makipag-away at mamatay,” Duterte added.

Duterte said he insisted in visiting marawi City despite the obvious security risks because he wanted to show the soldiers how important their sacrifices were.

“But I had to be there, bisita talaga ako para malaman ninyo na isa lang tayo. Your life is not less important than mine. Our lives are impotant to the country and to your family,” He said.
